Игра Ecco: The Tides of Time является продолжением первой части игры Ecco Dolphin, и продолжает своё повествование с того момента, где остановились. Геймплей игры схож, но имеет некоторые отличия, теперь Экко может превращаться в других существ. Сюжет игры слишком запутан, оказывается, что королева Вортекс (Vortex Queen) не была уничтожена, он возвращается на землю. Экко для того, что бы остановить её, приходиться отправиться в будущее, где он встречается со своими потомками. В будущем дельфины значительно развились, они научились летать, и их плавники стали немного длиннее. А так же они все стали, как бы обладать экстрасенсорными возможностями.
По ходу игры вам предстоит решать различные загадки, но уже попроще, чем в первой части игры. Так же присутствуют псевдо 3D уровни.
Главным отличием Sega Mega CD версии игры от ECCO: The Tides of Time для Sega MegaDrive / Genesis является видеоролики и более качественное музыкальное сопровождение.

Game Ecco: The Tides of Time is continuation of the first part of the game Ecco Dolphin, and continues the narration on that moment where stopped.
